Reduce Back Pain While Sitting
How can I avoid back pain while sitting?
First, sit up straight with back of the chair bolt upright and your abdomen pushing into the desk. Get a desk that allows you to stand as much as you can. Keep up a good strength and flexibility training program.
Stand Up At Work
Nobody said you had to work sitting down all day; it’s a killer. Sitting down tightens the calf, hamstring, and buttock muscles, tilting the pelvis backwards.
You end up in the rounded back (slump dog) position; you get a stiff neck, sore shoulders, carpel tunnel syndrome* and a painful lower back.
Stand up!
First up, why are you sitting down so much?
No one ever said you had to sit down all day to type.
Modify your working arrangements so you can stand up while typing.
You’ll need a box to put your keyboard and mouse on.
You don’t have to wait for work to get it for you; get it yourself. One person I know got a carpenter to knock up a stand for him.
You can adjust your monitor, so it’s easy to look at the screen.
Or what about kneeling for part of the day? Get yourself a bolster or pouffe. Kneeling prevents your buttock muscles from shortening.
And who said you couldn’t stand up when reading or talking on the phone?
You need only get a desk that goes up and down or an extra cupboard or filing cabinet that makes comfortable reading.
If your work won’t supply one, get one yourself. It’s your body! Look after it.
The Balan chair is an ideal alternative to a regular chair because it removes the hamstring and buttock muscles from the sit-down equation. You can sit up straight without thinking about it.
In the meantime, stay tuned, highly tuned and remember, standing up while you work takes the pressure off your back, neck and shoulders.
