There are three main causes of neck pain

1. A third of your neck pain probably comes from the same place as lower back pain.

This is why you need to do exercises to strengthen and loosen muscles further down your body.

Tight calf, hamstring and buttock muscles tilt the pelvis back. As a reaction, the head and shoulders move forward. While you’re walking around and sitting down your head is constantly pulling on the ligaments, tendons and muscles in your neck and shoulders. Sooner or later these soft tissues become stretched beyond their pain threshold.

Gradually over months and years bones start to move, discs bulge. As you can see from the diagram, rubbing, heating, crunching and vibrating the spot where it hurts isn’t going to fix the underlying problem.

What I’ve got for you is the exercises to straighten you up and get your neck back into better alignment.

2. The muscles designed to keep your head on top of your shoulders are not strong enough to do the job.

3. The muscles of your neck are too tight.

Is neck pain a medical problem?

Nope, it’s a fitness problem and you can’t solve a fitness problem with a medical solution. If you’re waiting for Big Pharma to come up the pill that will get your head back into better alignment I think you could be waiting for a long time!

Once you start to strengthen the weak muscles and loosen the tight muscles that are the cause of your problem, gradually, millimetre by millimeter you’ll get your neck back in better alignment.

As the muscles around your neck and shoulders become stronger they’ll be better able to support your head in correct alignment. The pain will go away.

Imagine if your pain was simply caused by the inability of muscles to support your head? If you don’t have a regular neck strengthening program this is likely to be the case. Like any other musculo-skeletal pain, neck pain is not caused by a lack of iso-butyl-propanoic-phenolic acid - which goes by the common name, ibuprofen!

Is This A Quick Fix?

Nope, it’s not going to be a quick fix. Think about it, the problem has been years in the making. Expecting to fix it in a couple of days is a big ask. But over the days, weeks and months you’ll start to feel better.

You're in this for the long haul. There's a reasonable probability that if you do the exercises I recommend you'll start to feel a lot better in 6 to 8 weeks. It could be a lot sooner.

Is this the best therapy?

Yes, it sure is. With neck pain the inclination is always to pass the responsibility for the rehab program onto someone else. But while heating, icing, rubbing, crunching and vibrating at the spot where it hurts, coupled with an anti-inflammatory tablet will help reduce inflammation, (and in some instances speed up the rehab process), it’s what you do to yourself that’s going to play the major role in your recovery.

If your problem is caused by a lack of strength and flexibility - and it’s highly likely that it is - then strength and flexibility exercises are the antidote. They are the foundation of recovery and without it, the effectiveness of any other modalities is dramatically reduced.

What about injury?

If you’re neck pain has been caused by a traumatic incident like whiplash, the major component of your rehab programs is strengthening and loosening the muscles around your neck. It’s a long haul process, but the quicker you get started the sooner you’re going to feel better.

How did I get into this situation?

If you're looking for a single cause look no further.


You slouch at the desk - pelvis tilted back, head and shoulders forward, abdomen miles away from the desk, with the perfect 'S' shaped curve of the spine turned in to a dreadful 'C' shape. You end up with a head that's too far forward of your shoulders. Ligaments, tendons and muscles are stretched beyond their pain threshold.

You experience this symptom of misalignment as neck pain. The pain is telling you to strengthen the weak muscles, loosen the tight muscles and get your neck back in better alignment.

If you don't have a regular set of neck exercises you're getting weaker and tighter by the day.

No wonder you're experiencing neck pain.

Is this a quick fix?

Nope; you're not going to get better by tomorrow. To do the job properly, to get bones back in alignment, to restore poor function to good it's going to take some time, but the quicker you get started the sooner your pain will go away.
