Lower Back Pain Help
A very high proportion of people have had, do have or will have lower
back pain at some stage of their life, so if you've got lower
back pain you're
not alone.
It's about the most common body system dysfunction there is.
Doctors surgeries are full of people with low back pain. For most people
it is not a medical condition so it's doubtful whether this is the best
place to go.
It's a fitness condition generated by weak and tight muscles that take
bones out of alignment. That's why you're in pain.
The doctor's main weapon of choice will be the prescription of a drug to
mask the pain. That's junk medicine, but to be fair this may be useful
in the short term. It allows you to get on with life and gradually over
the next few weeks the pain may go away of its own accord.
That's a definite maybe! For most people the pain hangs around like a bad
smell.
This is because a pain killer doesn't move your bones back into alignment.
Tens of thousands of people each day choose to go to physiotherapists,
chiropractors and masseurs. Many get relief. Some find the treatment exceedingly
helpful but there's a good chance that although muscles will be relaxed
and in some cases bones put back in alignment, mostly the treatment is
palliative and the relief temporary.
In the cases of bones being manipulated back into alignment there's a key
principle you need to be aware of.
Muscles pull bones out of alignment.
Just crunching the bones doesn't fix the underlying problem of muscles
pulling bones out of alignment. In a few weeks the pain comes back again.
There's a second principle you need to be aware of.
The cause of the pain is rarely at the site of the pain.
This means that just rubbing and manipulating the area where it's painful
is unlikely to fix the problem.
I'll give you a clue; the problem usually lies with tight calf, hamstring
and buttock muscles - and made worse by weak abdominal and back muscles.
Here's another principle that underpins the successful treatment of low
back pain.
It's a big ask expecting to get better by having someone do something to you.
And one more for good luck.
Sooner or later you have to do something to yourself.
That something is the strength and flexibility exercises to get your body (and keep your body) back into alignment.
HERE'S WHAT THE PROBLEM IS
The bones of the pelvis are drawn out of alignment by tight calf, hamstring and buttock muscles. Weak abdominal and back muscles only make the situation worse. you aren't strong enough to support your spinal column, either good or poor alignment.

When pelvis tilts and twists the bones immediately above it tilt and twist
in sympathy. They do this in a quest to keep you as upright as possible.
You can withstand the misalignment for a long time, but sooner or later
a critical incident comes along and muscles, ligaments, tendons and disks
are stretched beyond the pain threshold.
You can see from the model that just crunching the bones and rubbing the
muscles in your lower back doesn't fix the problem.
CAUSES OF LOW BACK PAIN
For some people it's an injury - they've had an accident, they've slipped
and fell awkwardly, something hit them ...
For most people it just comes out of the blue; it's a personally generated
dysfunction. Over the years, weak and tight muscles have gradually drawn
the bones of the pelvis and spinal column out of alignment.
Low back pain gradually sneaks up on you without you noticing.
In fact you could be teetering over the edge of a precipice, 99% of the
way toward having a herniated disk and you wouldn't know. And then you
swivel round to pick up a phone book or lift a bag of groceries into the
back of your car and BAMMO, your back goes.

You can't bend over. Every time you sneeze or cough it feels like there's a red hot poker being jammed into your back.
It's painful to roll over in bed and painful to get up in the morning.
You have trouble putting your shoes and socks on.
The incident could be something you're quite used to doing. For a normal, healthy person with a spinal column in good alignment and strong muscles to support it the incident wouldn't have caused a problem at all.
But if you don't have a regular strength and flexibility training program there's an 80% chance that sooner or later you'll find yourself teetering on the edge of low back pain.
If you're 20Kg (around 40 pounds) over weight make that 90%.
You're just waiting for a critical incident
Guess who gets the blame? You guessed it, the spanner, the phone book, the shovel and the groceries! Bad workmen are still blaming their tools.
Or you might blame your age. Age doesn't have much to do with strength and flexibility. The older you are the more time you've had to train!
