The New Back Pain Diagnosis system from Global Back Care.

Located in Canberra Australia, Global back Care has designed a new technique to assist people to work out some of the likely causes of their low back pain.

According to Global Back Care Director, John Miller, there is currently a gap in medical research knowledge about the causes of low back pain. This gap extends to radiologists, general practitioners and on through the broad scope of musculo-skeletal health therapists.

An inability to determine some of the likely causes of back pain means the treatment is often hit and miss, the restoration of poor musculo-skeletal health to good is delayed.

Most of the research literature indicates that low back pain comes from bones that are out of alignment and herniated discs. However we need to go back further to find the cause of the misalignment of the bones and the herniation of the disc.

According to John Miller, there are three principles involved in the treatment of low back pain.

The first is that most of the pain comes from lifestyle-related, personally-generated musculo-skeletal dysfunctions. Musculo-skeletal pain is the body’s way of telling people they are weak, tight, over-weight and their skeletal system is out of alignment.

The second principle - from San Diego musculo-skeletal therapist, Pete Egoscue - is that it’s muscles that move bones out of alignment. That's the bad news. The good news about this principle is that muscles can move bones back into alignment; you just need to do the right exercises.

The third principle - again from Egoscue - is that the cause of the pain is rarely at the site of the pain. This means the search for the cause of the herniated disc and misaligned bones has to extend beyond the spot where it is painful.

When vertebrae are out of alignment they squeeze the disc, with the centre of the disc eventually bulging and hitting the spinal nerves. When that happens every time people sneeze or cough it feels like someone is pushing a red hot poker into their back. They have trouble bending over to brush their teeth and putting their socks on.

According to research conducted by Global Back Care, it is apparent that low back pain is a symptom of weak and tight muscles attached to the pelvis - front, back and sides. Masking the symptom with a tablet doesn’t treat the cause of the problem. The problem becomes worse. Rubbing, crunching, palpating, prodding, poking, pushing, pulling, heating, vibrating and cutting at the spot where it hurts doesn’t get to the cause of the problem either.

Global Back Care ’s new back pain diagnostic system assists people and their therapists to work out which muscles are tight and which ones are weak and causing the pain.

The exercises that come with the diagnosis help to restore poor function to good. The body gets back into better alignment. The pain gradually goes away.

On top of that, the diagnostic system measures how strong people are and records how much they are overweight. Along with tight muscles, lack of all round strength and excess weight are the three big determinants of low back pain.

The new back pain diagnostic system is outlined in greater detail at and comes with a web-based diagnostic feature.

If you want to know why you have low back pain and you want to do something about it, you can send photos of yourself in various postures to the Global Back Care. You’ll receive an analysis, coupled with an exercise prescription designed to get yourself back into better alignment.

Do that and the pain goes away.
